Little mixed breed dogs can live way beyond 10 years of age, many times up to 15 or 20 years.
Adopting a dog is like adopting a child.

RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP

The decision to adopt a dog into your family, whether it be a first dog or an additional dog, should be thought out very carefully. This is NOT an impulse decision, but one that needs to be discussed among all family members and agreed upon unanimously.  Responsible dog ownership requires a lot of love, time and money.  If the responsibilities listed on this page seem to be more than you are willing to commit to, you should reconsider owning a dog.

Dogs should have their basic needs met:

• Good food – regular meals as well as snacks
• Proper medical care beginning immediately upon acquiring a dog
• Proper shelter and confinement
• Proper socialization and training

 Dogs must be kept under control:

• While outside in the neighborhood or park, leashed at all times
• While on leash, there should be control:
  • No jumping on adults, children or other pets
  • Should sit/stay when commanded
  • Should not be aggressive with people or other animals

Dogs should always be inside SECURE fenced area when off leash

• Fence cannot be jumped
• Secure gate, with lock
• Dog should not be unsupervised, even when in fenced area

Dogs should be exercised daily

• Walked on leash
• Play games like fetch
• Training sessions such as obedience school

Dogs should ALWAYS be supervised with young children

• No roughhousing or rough play with children
• No chasing children – own family as well as neighborhood
• No teasing, hitting, or overexciting the dog

Willing to make financial commitment

• Veterinarian expenses for emergency care, illness, yearly vaccinations, flea treatment, and heartworm preventative
• Purchasing equipment such as crates, beds, collars, leashes, harnesses, toys, etc.
• Cost of providing quality food
• Cost of any damages caused by the dog, i.e. chewing, digging, accidents on carpeting, etc.
